50th Anniversary Event March 1
The Rockbridge Symphony is set to dazzle audiences with a Winter Concert on Saturday, March 1, celebrating its 50th anniversary with a journey through some of Hollywood’s most iconic film scores.
In a nod to the orchestra’s founding era, the concert will launch into an iconic 1970s score that connects to the modern saga in the theme from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015).
The musical adventure continues with the bold and dynamic themes of “Spider-Man,” composed by the legendary Danny Elfman, followed by the spirited theme from “Chicken Run,” featuring a surprise instrumental twist. The orchestra will also take on the pulsepounding rhythms of “Mission Impossible,” followed by the awe-inspiring themes from “Jurassic Park.”
The program will also feature timeless Broadway and film favorites, including selections from “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Annie,” before sending the audience home on a high note with the exhilarating music of “Rocky.”
“This concert is a thrill for both the orchestra and our audience,” said Matt Mainella, artistic director. “Playing these cinematic masterpieces back-to-back is a fun challenge, requiring immense focus and coordination —there are no breaks between takes! We can’t wait to share this experience with the community.”
The concert is in the main sanctuary of Lexington Presbyterian Church at 7:30 p.m. A preconcert talk will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the Brady Chapel, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the evening’s music. Guests are invited to a post-concert reception to enjoy complimentary cookies and cider while mingling with fellow music lovers.
Tickets are priced at $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children 12 and under. They are available via the Rockbridge Symphony Facebook page (via Eventbrite) and at the following downtown outlets: Sugar Maple Trading Company, Artists in Cahoots, Cheese to You, and University Florist.
