Students Win Trophies In ACC Chess Tourney

Fifteen elementary and middle school students from the Lexington City Schools competed in the ACC Chess Championships in Roanoke on Jan. 25.

Three students from Waddell participated in the Beginners section of the tournament and finished in second place as a team. They were Henry Rahl, Rose Hierman, and Izzy D’Alessandro.

Six students from Waddell participated in the K-5 section of the tournament and finished in first place as a team. They were Theo Buenafe, Ahmad Hasan, Leland Crance, Luca Favero, Benjamin Rajsky and Arianna Hemmati.

Six students from Lylburn Downing participated in the K-8 section of the tournament and finished in first place as a team. Members included Alex Eastwood, Ben Phillips, Theo Rahl, Gibson Fox, Harry Loughhead, and Tim Simon.

Several students earned recognition for their individual performances. Three Waddell students, Ahmad Hasan, Theo Buenafe and Benjamin Rajsky, all finished in the top 10 in their division, finishing first, fourth, and 10th, respectively. Five LDMS students, Alex Eastwood, Tim Simon, Gibson Fox, Theo Rahl and Harry Loughhead, finished in the top 10 in their division, finishing second, third, fifth, sixth, and ninth, respectively.
