PM Wrestlers Win Duals

The Parry McCluer High School wrestling team won both of its duals last Wednesday at Bath County before placing eighth of 13 teams at the Rural Retreat Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

At Bath, even though they had to forfeit five weight classes, the Fighting Blues defeated James River 35-28. It was PM’s first win over the Knights in six or seven years.

PM then wrestled Pioneer District rival Bath County and won narrowly, 30-27.

On Saturday, the Blues had five wrestlers place in the top four. “All around, it was a pretty good tournament,” said PM head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough. “We had some guys that will need to clean up a few things, but overall we wrestled well.”

Blues placing fourth were junior Jacob Shafer (144) and freshman Timber Thomas (285/heavyweight).

Sophomore Jordan Brockenbrough (132) went 2-2 for the Blues, while senior Junior Convers (175) went 1-2.

The Blues will travel to Giles tonight, Wednesday, with wrestling starting at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Blues will play host for a home quad meet, starting at 10 a.m., rescheduled for Jan. 9 due to wintry weather. Visiting teams will be Buffalo Gap, Lord Botetourt and Staunton.

PM will have its final home competition of the season next Wednesday, Jan. 29, against George Wythe and Stuarts Draft. Wrestling will start at 6 p.m. Before the meet, the Blues will honor their three seniors: Convers, Driscoll and Jackson Brockenbrough.
