With local families facing a significant shortage of quality childcare options, the Rockbridge Area YMCA’s Early Learning Center (ELC) is endeavoring to let the community know that it currently has openings for its program for children ages 2 to 5.
“Finding dependable childcare has been a real challenge for families in Rockbridge County,” says Gwen Whitmore, childcare director. “The ELC is here to help fill this need by offering a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive.”
To give families a firsthand look at its offerings, the ELC will host an open house event, Christmas Tea at the ELC, on Dec. 16, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. During this event, families are invited to tour the facility, visit with staff, and see how the ELC’s programs support early development with a whole-child approach that combines learning with social and emotional growth, said Whitmore.
Since opening, the ELC has served over 250 children in Rockbridge County, providing vital support for families seeking reliable childcare. With a focus on fostering curiosity and confidence, the ELC’s curriculum emphasizes a balance of academic foundations, creative play, and hands-on exploration, explained Whitmore.
“Our open house event is a wonderful opportunity for families to see how we’re addressing this essential community need,” she added. “We want every family to feel welcome and confident in the care their children receive at the ELC.”
