Black Receives STAR Scholarship

Nicole Black, a senior at Rockbridge County High School, was selected to receive a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the Philanthropic Educational Organization. She was recommended by Chapter BG in Lexington. This competitive STAR Scholarship is for women who exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities and community service with potential for future success.

Black is a member of the National Honor Society, the Future Business Leadership of America and supports SAGA, which works to build a more inclusive RCHS. She provides leadership in soccer, varsity cross country and track and field and has been part of a team that has set school records. She is an officer on the Green Team which leads the school in recycling. She is close to achieving her Eagle Scout badge and is active in her church.

Black was selected to attend a summer academy at NASALangley, where the goal was to create a faux Mars mission, presenting all of the mathematical and biological tools needed for a successful mission.

Her ultimate goals are to be in the forefront of developing the chemistry involved in aerospace design and research.

Black will begin her college experience at Mary Baldwin University. She is the daughter of Christy and James Black of Natural Bridge.
