‘Break A Cowboy’ Breaks Big

‘Break A Cowboy’ Breaks Big

SJ’s Video Makes CMT

SJ McDonald’s burgeoning career as a country music recording artist is getting wider exposure. A music video for a song she co-wrote, “Break A Cowboy,” has been appearing on CMT recently.

This is the first time the former Rockbridge Baths farm girl and current Nashville songwriter and performer has appeared on CMT. The music video was actually made a year ago and came about by her winning an Instagram contest of a new-to-Nashville videographer, Jordan Jeck, who was looking to get his foot in the door of the music video business with a new artist.

McDonald is proud of the finished product. “Now Jordan is my go-to video guy,” she stated in an email. “He did an amazing job. My next plan is to hopefully get him to Rockbridge County to shoot my next video.”

The “Break A Cowboy” music video was shot in Nashville and Kentucky, all in one day. The video shows McDonald singing in a ranch setting with a horse that is interspersed with images of a cowboy who’s the apparent object of her affection.

“The big paint horse I am walking with in the video was actually just a horse being boarded on the ranch we filmed [at],” she said. “We threw a halter on him and I tried to walk/stand with him as much as possible. We only got about 30 seconds at a time with him because he was young and did not like to sit still. But it is safe to say I’ve never felt smaller or seen such a beautiful horse.”

If you can’t catch McDonald’s music video on CMT, formerly known as Country Music Television, which now just shows music videos overnight and in the early morning hours, or on the CMT Music channel, the music video is readily available on YouTube or by just Googling SJ McDonald and “Break A Cowboy.”

McDonald, who co-wrote the song with Alison Elena and Brittany Moore, recently signed a music writing contract with Major Bob Music, a Nashville music publisher.

The 2017 graduate of Rockbridge County High School who graduated from Belmont University in Nashville in 2021, will be taking her show on the road this summer, with a stop in Lexington planned. Be looking for an announcement about that performance in the near future.
