The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department will hold its first barbecue chicken sale of the spring season on Saturday, May 18, beginning at noon. Chicken halves and whole dinners will be available for purchase. A chicken dinner will include a half chicken, choice of two sides, a roll, applesauce and iced tea. Food items may be purchased as carryout or for dining in. Seating for indoor dining will be available. Payment by check or cash is accepted. Chicken will be available until all is sold.
Today, Wednesday, May 15, Pastor Bill Bearden will hold a meeting at the Collierstown United Methodist Church to discuss the recent General Conference of the United Methodist Church. All are invited to attend. On Sunday, May 19, members of the Collierstown United Methodist Church will worship with the Mt. Horeb congregation at the Mt. Horeb Church at 11:15 a.m. due to maintenance work being done at the Collierstown church. On May 23 there will a meeting at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke from 6:30 until 8 p.m. on Safe Sanctuaries.
The Collierstown Presbyterian Church will recognize during the 11 a.m. worship hour on Sunday, May 19, two of its youth who are graduating from Rockbridge County High School on May 23. Those high school seniors are Cullen Gualtieri and Ben Tomlin. Three young people from the congregation will also be welcomed into church membership. Josie Caldwell, Morgan Martin, and Chase Pooley have completed confirmation classes and have been approved for membership by a profession of faith. Following the morning worship service a time of fellowship will take place honoring all five young people and their families. Lemonade on the Lawn will be provided by the Presbyterian Women for members and friends to extend congratulations to these five young people.
The annual community Memorial Day service will be held on Sunday, May 26, at 12:30 p.m. on top of the cemetery hill at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. The service will honor those who have served in the military and are buried in the church cemetery. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at the same time in the church sanctuary.
Vacation Bible school for the Buffalo and Collierstown communities will be held the week of June 9-14 at the Palmer Community Center. This year’s theme is “Mystery Island: Tracking Down the One True God.” VBS will run from 5:45 to 8 nightly with classes offered for all ages. A meal will be provided each evening. Families and area residents are invited to come and enjoy Bible study, crafts and recreation. The Palmer Community Center is located on Blue Grass Trail. VBS is being sponsored by the seven community churches: Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown and Mt. Horeb United Methodist Churches, Collierstown and Oxford Presbyterian Churches, Rapps Mill Church, and the Union View Advent Christian Church.
Don’t forget the Rockbridge Regional Library’s bookmobile is visiting the grounds of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church each week on Wednesdays from 2:15 to 4 p.m. Community residents are invited to come to the Bookmobile to check out books and learn more about the services available to residents and to the community.
