Planners OK Wellness Center Certificate, Plan

The Lexington Planning Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness and a site plan for the proposed Lindley Center for Student Wellness, located at 200 E. Denny Circle on the Washington and Lee University campus at its meeting on March 28.

The Planning Commission previously approved a conditional use permit for the center, and city planner Arne Glaser reported that the proposed center met all of the requirements for the certificate of appropriateness and that the site plan had gone through two rounds of review by city staff and was found to meet all of the zoning requirements and to be in compliance with all relevant sections of the city code.

John Driscoll moved to approve the certificate of appropriateness with Mary Stuart Harlow providing the second. Harlow made the motion to approve the site plan, which Driscoll seconded.

Both motions passed in 3-0 votes. Commissioners Pat Bradley, Jon Eastwood and Leslie Straughan recused themselves from the discussion and vote on the certificate and site plan, citing connections to the university that created a conflict of interest. Eastwood is employed by W&L, while Bradley and Straughan’s spouses work for the university. Commissioner Gladys Hopkins was not in attendance.
