RC Boys Go 2-1 In Tennis

The Rockbridge County High School boys tennis team split a pair of home matches last week before earning a 9-0 road win over Valley District rival Broadway on Friday.

Playing three matches in four days, the Wildcats (6-3 overall, 3-2 district) started with a 5-4 home loss to nondistrict rival Alleghany (7-2) on Tuesday of last week at the Lexington Country Club courts.

RC head coach Scott Youngdahl said the match was “very tight, with very minimal differences. We had our chances. They have a fine team.”

Returning to district action at home against East Rockingham (6-5, 1-5) last Wednesday, the Wildcats eked out a 5-4 win. The contest came down to two singles matches, with RC’s Gardner Clement earning an 8-6 at No. 3 and Jaxon Johnson winning 8-3 at No. 4. “Very happy for them,” said Youngdahl.

Also winning in singles were Nic Vargas at No. 1 and Nic Faulds at No. 2. “The Nics are very reliable and never stop encouraging everyone on the team,” said Youngdahl.

Prior to the match at Broadway (3-7, 0-6), Youngdahl said he “felt nothing less than a 9-0 would be acceptable. And everyone came through.” When the teams met on March 18 at Broadway, RC won 8-1.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play at East Rockingham yesterday and will continue district action today, Wednesday, at Harrisonburg before playing host to Harrisonburg on Friday. They’ll have a rematch at Alleghany on Tuesday. All matches are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
