A feature motion picture for television on the life of Gen. George C. Marshall was in the works. - Lucille Mabry, Lexington’s city treasurer since 1967, announced her retirement.

- Washington and Lee University’s undefeated lacrosse team beat the University of Virginia 13-11 in front of a crowd of 10,000 fans at Scott Stadium.

The Buena Vista Volunteer Fire Department held a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication of its new firehouse. The new building is more than twice the size of the old firehouse. - The United States Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal by Virginia Military Institute of a lower court ruling that school directed prayer violated the First Amendment.

-In a letter to the editor, John Quist compared President George W. Bush to Captain Ahab in Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick.” Saddam Hussein was Bush’s elusive white whale.
