March 17, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am writing to express my strong recommendation for the renaming of Lee Highway in Rockbridge County, aligning with the commendable actions taken by other Virginia counties. The reconsideration of historical names and symbols has become an essential part of our collective journey towards inclusivity, diversity, and acknowledgment of the values that define our community.
As we witness several counties in Virginia embracing change by renaming streets, schools, and monuments, it is time for Rockbridge County to join Arlington County and Fairfax County and engage in renaming this highway. Lee Highway, named after a historical figure associated with the Confederate era, carries with it a legacy that may not fully reflect the diverse and inclusive community spirit we aspire to cultivate.
Renaming Lee Highway presents an opportunity to choose a name that better reflects the values, diversity, and shared history of Rockbridge County. Other counties in Virginia have successfully navigated this process, selecting names that honor local history, notable figures, or embody the inclusive ideals of the community.
It is crucial to acknowledge that the renaming process is not about erasing history but rather about recognizing the evolving values of our community and ensuring that our public spaces are welcoming and reflective of the principles we hold dear. This initiative aligns with broader efforts across the nation to build bridges and create a sense of unity among residents.
Having been raised and educated in Virginia some 60 years ago, I can understand those who feel a loyalty to the inaccurate history taught to Virginia school children in fourth and seventh grades and more. It is beyond time to challenge this false narrative regarding the honoring of the Confederacy, the enslavement of fellow human beings, and the full history of the cause of America’s Civil War.
I encourage Rockbridge County residents and leaders to engage in open and respectful dialogue to propose and select a name that resonates with the aspirations and values of our vibrant community. Public participation, historical context, and inclusivity should be at the forefront of this decision-making process.
