The Hall family reunion was held Sunday, July 16, at the Palmer Community Center. Sixty descendants of William Merset and Sadie Belle Deacon Hall registered at the annual family gathering and covered-dish picnic. In addition to local residents, Virginia family members came from Front Royal, Glen Allen, Goshen, Herndon, Lexington, Natural Bridge Station, Salem, and White Post.
The Collierstown United Methodist Church will hold its Sunday morning worship service at 11 at the Lake Robertson pavilion on Sunday, July 30. A covered-dish luncheon and time of fellowship will follow. All friends and members of the church are invited to attend. During the month of July, the Collierstown United Methodist Charge has led the weekly lake worship services for campers at 9 a.m. at the Lake Robertson campground chapel. On July 30, campers are invited to come to the pavilion for the service and time of fellowship.
The Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church’s congregation held an outdoor worship and baptism service on Sunday, July 23, at 55 Sunflower Lane off South Buffalo Road.
On Sunday, July 23, the Rev. Bill Klein was the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. He also led the observance of the sacrament of Communion. A congregational meeting was held following the service for the purpose of electing a Pastor Nominating Committee to begin the search for a new minister. Those elected to serve on the committee were Judy Goodbar, Reese McCormick, Rosalea Potter, Austin Ramsey and Hayden Richardson. Karey Ramsey was elected to assist the committee with data management.
The annual “School Bag” campaign sponsored by the Collierstown Presbyterian Women began on Sunday, July 23, following the worship service. Canvas tote bags and lists of supplies needed were made available to members. Filled bags are to be returned to the church on or before Aug. 20 for distribution by Church World Service in the United States and abroad. The church community is invited to participate in this effort and can obtain bags and information by calling the church office, (540) 4 63-5918. I tems needed for the bags include three 70-page spiral notebooks, six unsharpened pencils, a pencil sharpener with a shavings catcher, one large eraser, a 12-inch ruler with metric and English units of measure, one pair of rounded tip scissors, and a 24-count box of crayons. Donations of the supplies needed or monetary donations to purchase supplies to fill the bags may also be given. Those wishing to make a financial gift to the School Bag campaign should designate it for school bags and mail it to Collierstown Presbyterian Church, 31 Church Drive, Lexington, VA 24450. This year’s goal is to fill 200 canvas tote bags for distribution. Your help is needed to ensure every student will have the needed supplies when the new school year begins.
There will be a one night “Community Revival” at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department on the evening of Aug. 10. The featured speakers for the event are the Rev. Kirk Wade and his wife Dr. Janelle Wade of Just Believe Ministries. The evening will begin with a covered- dish dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the revival service at 7. Those coming for supper are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Kenney’s chicken will be provided. Free child care will be available for children between the ages of 3 and 7. Hosting the event are Union View Advent Christian Church, Mt. Horeb and Collierstown United Methodist Churches, Oxford and Collierstown Presbyterian Churches and Rapps Mill Church.
Plans for the 2024 Effinger Community Birthday Calendar prepared and sold by the Effinger Ruritan Club have been made. The cost of the calendar is $3. Birthday, anniversary and memorial listings are 30 cents each. Calendars and listings may be purchased by contacting a Ruritan Club member. Calendar and listing orders need to be placed by Aug. 15.
The Effinger Ruritan Club invites everyone to attend this year’s Palmer Ice Cream Supper on Saturday, Aug. 19. at the Palmer Community Center. Live musical entertainment, good food and lots of delicious homemade ice cream in a variety of flavors will be available for p urchase.
