Oct. 26, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: Well, we’ve finally come to the last week of what many are calling (again) the most important election cycle ever. The same polls that told us Iowa would vote for Kamala and that the country would elect Hilary are confidant (again) that Trump is in for a sound drubbing.
Maybe that will happen, maybe it won’t; either way I’m skeptical that we will be better off as a country. Suppose the Democrats sweep all the contested seats. Do you think congressional Republicans will turn on the administration and start playing nice? Do you think the congressional Democrats will honestly try to work in cooperation with this administration? Neither party is the solution. You think things are unhinged now? Just wait.
The system is broken. Without real communication, earnest cooperation or sincere compromise, only arguing and contention remain as tools of the trade- a lose/ lose situation for sure. It is evident that the parties control the candidates. It is more important to be a Republican than a Virginian, more important to be a Democrat than an American. It is heretical to think that any opposing viewpoint is valid.
I’m not sure what to do about it. A real solution will not come from politicians pontificating for the party. Change will come from the people.
I hold this truth to be selfevident: A house divided cannot stand. One nation under the Republicans? - that’s never gonna happen. One nation under the Democrats? - yeah right! One nation under … under? … help me out here - one nation under what?
