Apple butter, pumpkins, masks and black cats... It's spooky season!
The front page stories on October 30, 1985 were:
- Complaints at a public hearing about road maintenance.
- The upcoming election that year had Buena Vista bustling with voters.
- A touching story about Joan Manley, a peacetime hero.
- It looked as though Rockbridge County could have run out of money due to some late tax tickets.
This issue features some fall staples: college football, a 155 pound pumpkin, apple day at the bank, kids in masks, and some Halloween ads!
Back in those days, the ads had to be made up by hand, with small graphics from clip-art manuals cut up and pasted along with the copy. Can you spot the identical grinning jack-o-lanterns? How about blocks of words over graphics? And would you want to browse for real estate with a haunted house by the listings?
