Man Charged In Raphine Break-in

An Augusta County man is being held without bond in Rockbridge Regional Jail, charged with multiple felonies in connection to a burglary at the Orchard Creek Exxon in Raphine last week.

According to a press release posted to the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page Sunday, Chad Casey Butler Jr., 24, was arrested on Oct. 15 and charged with three felonies in connection with the break-in and theft, which occurred overnight between Oct. 14 and 15: one count of breaking and entering, one count of possession of burglary tools and one count of wearing a mask in commission of a crime. He was also charged with two misdemeanors – one count of destruction of property and one count of petit larceny.

About $400 worth of general merchandise was stolen, including alcohol, Sheriff Tony McFaddin told The News-Gazette.

Deputies with the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Exxon and collected evidence which led to the identification of Butler as a suspect. They then worked with the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office to bring Butler into custody.

“This case demonstrates the dedication and professionalism of our deputies,” McFaddin said in the press release. “Their quick response, attention to detail, and commitment to pursuing every lead allowed us to rapidly identify and apprehend a suspect … I also want to thank the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office for their outstanding assistance and partnership throughout this investigation. Their cooperation and support were instrumental in helping bring this case to a successful resolution, and it is another example of how neighboring agencies working together make our communities safer.”

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 18 in Rockbridge County General District Court.
