Bird Club Walking At McCormick’s

Bird Club Walking At McCormick’s
THIS GREAT Blue Heron was photographed by Dick Rowe at McCormick Farm.

Area residents are invited to join the Rockbridge Bird Club on Saturday, Oct. 24, for a walk on the Marl Creek Trail at McCormick Farm, historic family farm of inventor Cyrus Mc-Cormick. Birders will be on the lookout for resident species and perhaps a few migrants that have lagged behind.

Located in Raphine, McCormick farm was donated to Virginia Tech in 1954 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Today it is an active agricultural research station with ponds and trails open to the public. The varied habitats offer excellent opportunities to sight both woodland, field and water birds.

The group will meet at 8 a.m. at the McCormick Farm parking lot for a two-three-hour walk on an easily navigated walking trail. Walkers are reminded to wear sturdy footwear and bring binoculars. In the event of heavy rain, the outing will be canceled.

All Bird Club outings are free and open to members and nonmembers alike, with or without birding experience. For more information or weather update, visit Rockbridge Bird Club on Facebook.
