It's back to the 90s because we have a birthday request for a Flashback this week! If you want to see the newspaper from the day you were born (or the closest issue), just send a message to our Digital Media Specialist and we'll search the archives for you and feature it during our weekly Flashback Friday!
The front page stories in The News-Gazette on April 8, 1992 were:
- Lees Carpet in Glasgow blames slow commercial carpet sales for their decision to lay off 200 employees.
- A public hearing will take place for the Rockbridge County budget, which will propose an increase in real estate taxes.
- Students and faculty at Waddell Elementary School evacuated in less than 2 minutes after gas fumes filled the ventilation system.
- Jimmy Carter was scheduled to speak at Washington & Lee later that month.
Many front page stories are continued in the second image, along with a photo of Waddell Elementary School after the evacuation and an ad to reserve a hardcover copy of "Glasgow, Virginia: One Hundred Years of Dreams." If you happen to have a copy of that, we'd love to see it! Send a message to our Digital Media Specialist.
This issue is chock full of classic News-Gazette features like The Dining Guide, The Happy Cook - with a recipe for busy and "nutritious-minded" people, local school honor roll and lunch menus, and then a special feature in the religion section on the renovation of Trinity Methodist Church's organ.
