9/11 Without End

Sept. 21, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: Like everyone of a certain age, the unimaginable shock, horror and continued mourning of the 2,753 people killed in terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center 25 years ago, have been much on my mind of late. While reading people’s memories of this tragic day, how it haunts them still, I read, too, of the people around the world who wake up morning after morning to another their own “9/11s,” ripping apart their homes, their families, their countries and their psyches. Around the world today, as we put 9/11 behind until next September, and look forward to autumn, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, it is important to keep in mind what’s going on beyond our borders even as we sink back into complacency: - 125,000-150,000 military deaths and 16,800 civilian deaths in Ukraine since February 2022.
