Southern Virginia University will present Thornton Wilder’s beloved classic “Our Town” this fall, inviting audiences to slow down, look closely and rediscover the extraordinary beauty hidden within everyday life. Performances take place Sep 25-26 and Oct 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. at SVU’s Performing Arts Center (1 University Hill Dr, Buena Vista, VA). Doors open at 7 p.m.
First performed in 1938 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “Our Town” is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of American theatre and remains one of the most beloved and frequently produced plays in American history.
Offering a poignant portrait of everyday life in the fictional village of Grover’s Corners, “Our Town” reminds us that the routine moments in life — a conversation across the kitchen table, a walk through town, a first love, a family gathering — are often the very moments that give our lives their deepest significance. It affirms that every individual story matters and that the strength of a community is found in the bonds that unite its members.
“‘Our Town’ asks us to look again at the lives we are already living,” said Professor David Dwyer, director of the production. “Wilder reminds us that we don’t have to travel somewhere extraordinary to find meaning. Sometimes we simply have to stop and notice what has been in front of us all along.”
