Candidates for Lexington City Council will participate in a moderated forum next week hosted by local community group 50 Ways Rockbridge.
The event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the Rockbridge Area Relief Association building, 350 Spotswood Drive.
With the death of Mayor Frank Friedman in July, this year’s election has an unusual element, with incumbent Council member David Sigler, who had already filed paperwork to run for a seat again, opting to run for the mayor’s seat in November. The timing of events means his name will thus appear in two places on the ballot. Sigler is currently serving as interim mayor. Opposing him for mayor is Nicholas Betts, a sitting Council member who previously decided not to run again, but has opted to throw his hat in the ring for the mayor’s job.
The other candidates on the ballot are Meghan Ferguson, a former Lexington School board candidate, and newcomer Amber Ansted, a Lexington resident.
The program is slated to last 75-90 minutes. Each participant will offer a short statement of their vision for the city of Lexington, followed by the opportunity to provide brief answers to questions covering the city’s budget, services, taxes and other issues.
The program will be recorded for later viewing via the 50 Ways Rockbridge website.
Early voting for November’s election begins this Friday, Sept. 18.
