Roadcap Classic Raises Funds For Scholarship To Honor Late Coach Several hundred people came to the Rockbridge County High School baseball field on Sunday afternoon to honor the late Travis Roadcap, the head RC baseball coach who passed away unexpectedly on July 16 at age 34, at the inaugural Roadcap Classic. There were three softball games, with four teams playing, and players included RC alumni who played for Roadcap, the Wildcats’ head baseball coach for the last seven years. Winning the trophy was 2021 RC graduate Garret Huffman’s team, defeating 2025 RC graduate Drew Potter’s team for the inaugural Butch Edwards Memorial Trophy. The event organizers were, ABOVE RIGHT, Kasey Potter (speaking) and Evan Golladay (black shirt, brown pants), who played for Roadcap while he was a student at RC. Other former RC baseball players included Derek Smith (below left) and Kaden Hall (below right), who was named Stu Rogers pitcher of the game. The Devin Riley player of the game was 2026 RC graduate 2026, with Dr. Ted Hemphill named honorable mention. Numbers were being added at press time, but the event raised funds for the Travis Roadcap Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will go to student-athletes that are blue-collar and enjoy working outdoors and being out on sports fields. After the event concluded, Potter, a close friend of Roadcap, posted on Facebook, “Sundays spent on the ballfield are the best kind of days. Many thanks to all those who volunteered, sponsored, showed up, showed out, shared stories, donated and everything in between!” The second annual Roadcap Classic is planned for Sunday, Sept. 12, 2027.
