A large section of downtown Lexington's Oak Grove Cemetery was cordoned off Friday after storms felled at least two massive trees, leaving the grounds littered with branches.
Storms with 60 mph straight-line winds tore through Lexington last Friday night, leaving trees on homes and cars, streets and sidewalks full of debris and leaving thousands without power.
At the cemetery, a massive, 385-year-old white oak know as the Preston Oak was uprooted, damaging gravestones below. At least one other large tree also fell in the part of the historic cemetery lining South Main Street.
Public Works officials said crews will come in to assess damage to the cemetery Monday and remove smaller branches. In the meantime, visitors can still access the Stonewall Jackson gravesite by going around the back of the plot.
