Friday - On this, the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on America, the Lexington Fire Department held its annual 9/11 memorial ceremony at the firehouse this morning.
Lt. Jonathan Bowden opened the ceremony and led everyone in a moment of silence. He then gave a short speech remembering the firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as those who have died from the lingering effects of the attacks.
"The 343 firefighters were more than names on the memorial. They were sons, they were daughters, husbands, wives, mothers and fathers, friends, neighbors, coaches and mentors. They were firefighters and they had families waiting for them. Yet when the call came, they did what they had been sworn to do: they went."
The program for the ceremony contained the times of each incident on Sept. 11, 2001.
