Now That It’s Lake America …
Sept. 3, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: For years, children trying to remember the names of all five Great Lakes relied on the mnemonic H.O.M.E.S in order to trigger Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior.
Now that President Trump has decided to rename Ontario “Lake America” (and Google maps have already incorporated the change), what memory trick will help us now? I guess it must be the only real-world combination that forms an English word. And, sadly, that’s S.H.A.M.E.! How appropriate!
