Sept. 3, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: On the evening of Sept. 2, I enjoyed a quiet moment to read the latest News-Gazette.
Once again, it boasts an embarrassment of riches in terms of cultural, intellectual, athletic, university-connected, and overall community-oriented events to attend. From the Community Festival to the wide array in the C.R.E.W. Playbook by RARO; the wonderful community dinners by Rockbridge CAN and The Community Table; our local churches, historical societies and museums; the beautiful flowers maintained by the garden clubs; small business owners; Brushy Hills, the Chessie Trail, and Woods Creek trail; activities for children and teens; the multitude of opportunities for enjoying live music – the list goes on and on.
Added, we are fortunate to have two independent newspapers – a true rarity for any community, and especially one of this size.
We tell newcomers to the area that you have to work really hard at “being bored” around here – there is always something to do, see, learn, or experience around here.
None of this happens by accident. It is due to everyone who finds ways to contribute their talents, energy, finances, creativity, education, and perspectives. To everyone who, in their own way, makes the community we live in so wonderful: thank you!
