By Jeremy S. Franklin The Parry McCluer High School volleyball team dropped 3-0 road decisions to Amherst County and James River last week, falling to 0-4 on the young season.
Last Monday, the Lancers (2-2) captured a win in straight sets against the Fighting Blues. While disappointed with the result, first-year PM head coach Elle Kindred is continuing to see progress from her squad.
“We are growing and getting better,” Kindred said. “Now we just need to put it all together. Each match, we’ve shown growth in certain areas, but we are due for a match where everything comes together.”
PM followed that up on Thursday with a 3-0 setback against the unbeaten Knights (4-0), who completed a season sweep of the Blues. JR also won in consecutive sets against PM in Buena Vista on Aug. 27.
In Thursday’s rematch in Buchanan, Jorja Catlett paced the Blues with four assists and two blocks. Ciara Hamilton notched two kills, and Josie Martinez had two aces.
Despite the loss, Kindred thought that her team made some significant strides with serve-receive – though she acknowledged that the Blues still have other areas where they’re striving to improve.
“We received so much better than we have been – really proud of the girls there,” the PM coach said. “I think we still have some growing to do in the communication aspect of things. We are in the process of learning effective ways to communicate, and I think that will really elevate our game level.”
The Blues were slated to face Amherst in the return match at home last night. PM will visit Nelson County this evening before traveling to Rockbridge County on Monday, with junior varsity competition beginning at 5:30 p.m. on both nights.
