Ownership of the Stonewall Jackson House was transferred to the Historic Lexington Foundation by Lee-Jackson Memorial Inc. of Charlottesville. HLF planned a painstaking restoration of the house to its appearance during Jackson’s residency from 1859 to 1861. - After moving toward making Main and Jefferson streets one-way permanently, Lexington City Council was evenly divided on voting for a 45-day trial period for twoway traffic. - Three people sustained injuries in a collision of a tractor- trailer and a pickup truck on Interstate 81 near Steeles Tavern-Raphine. The accident backed up traffic in the southbound lane for 15 miles.

A loaded runaway logging truck hurtled its way from the east to the west side of Buena Vista along U.S. 60. The truck finally flipped over after failing to make it around a curve in front of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where it slammed into an oncoming SUV. Amazingly no one was seriously injured. - The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy ordered the temporary suspension of blasting operations at Charles W. Barger & Son Quarry after neighboring properties were damaged during blasting. - Republican incumbent Sen. George Allen rode on a borrowed horse named Bubba in the annual Labor Day parade in Buena Vista.
