The Rockbridge County High School golf team placed second in two nine-hole matches last week, playing at Shenvalee Golf Resort in New Market last Monday and then at The Club of Staunton in Verona last Tuesday.
At Shenvalee, the Wildcats recorded a team score of 173, narrowly trailing Broadway’s 169, while RC’s Shenandoah District rival Wilson Memorial shot a 175 to place third of three teams. RC junior Davis Welsh was the medalist, firing a 39 on the par-36 course. Broadway’s Hayden Hull placed second of 18 golfers, shooting a 40.
The Wildcats’ second scorer was junior Parker Flint, carding a 43 to tie five individuals, including four golfers from Broadway, for third place. Junior teammate Hendrick Colvin posted a 45 for RC’s third score, and sophomore Brody Grue completed the Wildcats’ scoring by posting a 46. Also competing for the Wildcats were senior Finbar Looney, shooting a 48, and senior Miles Holland, carding a 53 in his first varsity match.
Reviewing the day, RC head coach Garret Huffman said, “I’m proud of everyone on the team as we continue to work each day to improve. There’s a lot of the season left, and we’re headed in the right direction.”
In a dual match against Shenandoah District rival Fort Defiance the next day, the Wildcats shot a 179, but Fort recorded what Huffman called an “amazing” team score of 156 to win on the ninehole course at The Club of Staunton in Verona.
Looney led the Wildcats by firing a 39 on the par-35 course, just one stroke behind Fort’s top golfer. Welsh shot a 42 for RC’s second score, Flint carded a 48, and Colvin and Grue each posted a 50. Also competing for RC was junior Tanner Hickman, shooting a 56.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play at The Homestead in Hot Springs on Monday, finishing a district match that was suspended after five holes on Aug. 10 due to storms. Their next competition will be a nine-hole match against Turner Ashby next Thursday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg.
