Earning its first win of the young season, the Rockbridge County High School golf team defeated Rocktown and Shenandoah District rival Riverheads on Thursday afternoon at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
The Wildcats recorded a team score of 170 in the nine-hole match, while Rocktown placed second with 174, and Riverheads (181) finished third.
RC junior Hendrick Colvin was the medalist, firing a 39 on the challenging course, while junior teammate Davis Welsh shot a 40 to tie Riverheads golfer Benny Crawford for second place of 18 individuals. Rocktown’s James Hewitt placed fourth with a 42.
The Wildcats’ third scorer was senior Finbar Looney, carding a 45, while sophomore teammate Parker Flint posted a 46 to complete RC’s team scoring. Also competing for the Wildcats were junior Addie Brown and sophomore Sam Kelly, each shooting a 55.
Pleased with his team’s win, RC head coach Garret Huffman said he was “super proud of everyone and the work they’re putting in.”
Wildcats Third At Greenbrier
The Wildcats placed third of four teams on Monday of last week at The Greenbrier Golf Club in White Sulfur Springs, W.Va.
Greenbrier East won with a 318, James River (320) placed second, while RC (368) and Shenandoah District rival Alleghany (414) rounded out the standings.
Welsh led the Wildcats, firing a 79 on the beautiful and challenging 18-hole, par-74 course. Colvin shot a 93 for RC’s second score, Flint carded a 97, and Looney posted a 99 to complete team scoring. Also competing for the Wildcats were junior Tanner Hickman (106) and sophomore Brody Grue (107).
Reviewing the day, Huffman said, “The course was playing extremely tough with all the rain that had been through the area, and the rough was super thick. Overall, it was an amazing day to play a course that has held many professional tournaments in the past.”
The Wildcats were scheduled to take on Broadway and district rival Wilson Memorial on Monday at Shenvalee Golf Resort in New Market before traveling to The Club of Staunton in Verona to take on Fort Defiance yesterday. Next Monday, they’ll finish a district match that was suspended after five holes on Aug. 10 due to storms when they travel to The Homestead in Hot Springs.
Looking ahead, Huffman said, “We still have a lot of the season left, with three district 18hole matches left, and everyone is working hard every single day.”
