July 1950 brought a couple of building projects to our area that we still use today. The corner of Washington and Nelson in downtown Lexington has been under construction for months now, but in 1950 another construction project was approved. Plus, two businesses got their start in the summer of 1950, but only one has survived to celebrate 75 years of business. Let's look at the July 13, 1950 issue of The Rockbridge County News to find out.
The front page stories for July 13, 1950 were:
- The contract was awarded for the construction of the Adair-Hutton building (on the corner of Washington and Nelson)
- An announcement for two drive-in theaters to open. One in Buena Vista and one just north of Lexington.
- Two people were arrested in Texas, charged with abandoning their 5-month-old baby on a lawn in Lexington.
- A skating rink opened at the softball field.
