Bert Mizusawa, a retired U.S. Army major general and former deputy undersecretary for the Army, captured the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Warner in the Nov. 3 general election.
Mizusawa far outdistanced two other candidates in the GOP primary held Tuesday, Aug. 4. Statewide, Mizusawa was the choice of 122,831 voters, or 51.45 percent, far ahead of David W. Williams, who collected 69,107 votes, or 28.95 percent; and Kim Farington, who had 46,808 votes, or 19.61 percent.
That was also the order of finish in all three Rockbridge area localities. Those totals are as follows: Rockbridge County –Mizusawa, 733 votes, 54.91 percent; Williams, 398 votes, 29.81 percent; Farington, 204 votes, 15.28 percent.
Buena Vista – Mizusawa, 109 votes, 50.93 percent; Williams, 80 votes, 37.38 percent; Farington, 25 votes, 11.68 percent.
Lexington – Mizusawa, 49 votes, 39.52 percent; Williams, 42 votes, 33.87 percent; Farington, 33 votes, 26.61 percent.
Voter turnout locally ranged from 8 percent in Rockbridge County to 5 percent in Buena Vista to 3 percent in Lexington. This was the only Aug. 4 primary election in the Rockbridge area. ...
