Reverie Puppets To Perform ‘Waiting Room’

Owen Collins and Sam Camp of Reverie Puppets will perform “Waiting Room,” their newly devised puppet play about cryptids, Aug. 14-16 at the Lenfest Center.

Cryptids are creatures who may or may not exist - the Loch Ness Monster, Jersey Devil, Jackalope and others. The puppeteers have created a cast of cryptids who act out a tale of bureaucracy and extinction. “Waiting Room” is for audiences over the age of 14, and is made possible in part by a grant from Washington and Lee University.

Puppet theatre is one of the world’s oldest theatre traditions and is part of nearly every culture worldwide. Devised theatre is a relatively new mode of creation, by comparison – it’s the process of collaboratively creating new theater without a defined hierarchy, where the creators are also the performers. Reverie combines the old and the new, and Camp and Collins give themselves a set number of days to craft something that will captivate their audiences.

“Devised theatre adds an extra layer of complexity to the performance,” said Collins. “And puppet theatre pushes boundaries,” Camp added.

“Waiting Room” will be performed in the Johnson Theatre in the Lenfest Center for the Arts on Friday, Aug. 14, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 15, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 16, at 3 p.m.
