Do you remember spending most of the year in school, just waiting for it to end so you could be free for the summer? Do you remember what your favorite activity was, or the food your parents fed you that you just couldn't stand? Sometimes, as we get farther away from our more youthful days, we forget the little things that were important to us before we didn't have to think about taxes or meal planning. We may even forget that children are actually a part of our community. They may not know or have an opinion on the economic or political climate surrounding them, but they live in it and are affected by it. They have a place here with all of us.
For this series, we'll get to hear from two young citizens every week. They'll tell us about their hobbies and goals for the future. We'll get to know what's on their minds and maybe remember what it was like to be a kid again.
This week we have 11 year old Makenzi:
What do you like most about school?

Um, probably seeing my friends and math. I just like learning about it.
What is your favorite food? What about your least favorite?
My favorite food is buffalo chicken wings.
[Least favorite] Um, probably pickles. They're just nasty.
Do you like to read? What do you like to read?
Um, Junie B. Jones books.
Do you collect anything / play an instrument / play any sports? If not, what would you like to do?
I play softball, since like first grade. I just like throwing balls and stuff, and hitting.
What country would you like to visit, and why?
Um, maybe an island?
What do you want to do when you grow up?
A teacher. I just think it'll be pretty fun.
Tell me a goal you have in the future?
Um, to be like really good at stuff like school and softball.

And 9 year old Charlie:
What do you like most about school?

Um, playing with friends. We usually like playing on the bars.
What is your favorite food? What about your least favorite?
I think cantaloupe. Or honeydew. Yeah, honeydew is my favorite.
Ooh, my least favorite food. Probably lettuce, but I like broccoli.
Do you like to read? What do you like to read?
Yeah, I love reading. Comics, and with my dad we're reading Harry Potter, Eragon, Eldest, and The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
Do you collect anything / play an instrument / play any sports? If not, what would you like to do?
Well, I like playing soccer and baseball with my friends over in my back yard. One of my everyday hobbies is listening to songs. Songs by Imagine Dragons.
What country would you like to visit, and why?
Um, Mexico. I don't know, cuz one of my friends. I don't really know but he was either born there or he's lived there for a long time. And also it just looks like a cool place. Plus, I've already been to Canada. I went to Waterton with my family.
What do you want to do when you grow up?
I could want to be an artist or, like, a professional soccer player because I like drawing and doing art and I like watching soccer and seeing how it goes and I feel like I can make a goal. That's gonna be kinda hard though.
Tell me a goal you have in the future?
Well maybe, I wanna run a 5k cause I like running. I forgot about that because I haven't been training. And also one of my goals, a goal that I want to do, is to do 12 push-ups in a row. I mean pull-ups. I think my high score is either 6 or 9.
