Buena Vista City Public Schools have made important updates to its School Wellness Policy to ensure students have increased access to water throughout the school day. This policy change will undoubtedly have a positive impact, as 886 students will have access to the support they need next school year to stay hydrated throughout the day.
This updated policy was developed in collaboration with Rev Your Bev, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth’s (VFHY) healthy hydration campaign, and its statewide, awardwinning high school program, Y Street. Research has consistently shown that water is the healthiest beverage choice, as it serves as fuel for your body. Since 2013, Rev Your Bev and Y Street have made a sustained effort to promote healthy hydration messages, helping individuals make drinking water a habit and improving Virginians’ overall health.
Buena Vista’s revised wellness policy now aligns more with Rev Your Bev’s best practices. The revised policy recognizes water as an essential nutrient and ensures that free, safe drinking water is consistently available and accessible to students throughout the school day, including in cafeterias and high-traffic areas. It also prioritizes maintenance of clean water sources, allows students to carry water bottles, and encourages staff to model healthy hydration behaviors.
VFHY and Y Street are committed to supporting Virginia school divisions’ efforts to maintain positive, healthy learning environments and to serving as a resource for Virginia schools.
Buena Vista City Public Schools has joined the growing list of divisions with comprehensive wellness policies that prioritize access to water and promote healthy hydration, becoming Rev Your Bev’s 43rd partner.
Buena Vista City Public Schools will receive free resources, such as water bottles and dispensers, from VFHYas part of its partnership with Rev Your Bev to support the division in implementing its updated policy.
