We have a busy month coming up with lots of community events on the calendar for August.
Saturday, Aug. 8, Oxford’s Men’s fellowship will meet beginning at 8 a.m. in the church social hall. Breakfast foods and coffee will be provided. This time of fellowship is open to all men in the community.
Thursday, Aug. 13, the mobile food pantry provided by RARA and the Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee University will be at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department from 2 to 3 p.m. Canned goods, fresh and frozen meats and fresh produce are available at no charge. Do you have a friend or neighbor who may benefit from this service? Help spread the word! Even if you don’t have a need, stop by and thank these folks for caring for our community!
Saturday, Aug. 15, is the date for the 36th annual ice cream supper hosted at The Palmer Community Center by the Effinger Ruritans. You will find hamburgers, hotdogs, pulled pork, roasted corn on the cob, homemade ice cream and live music from 4 to 8 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Palmer.
Sunday, Aug. 16, will be Oxford’s final summer worship in the park. A covered-dish picnic will follow the service. Hot dogs and drinks will be furnished. Bring a covereddish or dessert and share in some summer fellowship with your friends and neighbors. All will be moved indoors if the weather is bad.
Tuesday, Aug. 11, and Thursday, Aug. 20, are the next potential dates for the headstone cleaning project that is taking place at the Oxford Cemetery. Community volunteers are welcome. Helping with this project is a very meaningful way to show our gratitude for the legacy that has been passed on to us. Thursday, Aug. 27, has been set aside for The Effinger Community Revival beginning at 6 p.m. This annual revival service, sponsored by the area churches, will be held at the Lake Robertson Pavilion. Randy Smith will be speaking and music will be provided by Dorsey Hostetter. Light refreshments will be provided.
Oxford’s Adult Sunday School appreciates Pastor Segars for expanding our understanding of John Calvin and our Presbyterian heritage over the summer months. We will be finishing up this study during the month of August and moving into a study on Bonhoeffer as follows: Aug. 9 ‒ Calvin and the Holy Spirit, Calvin and the State; Aug. 16 - Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Way of Jesus Christ; Aug. 23 - Spirituality of the Word; Aug. 30 - The Longing for Community.
