July 24, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am getting too old for this. It is just heart-breaking at times when history repeats itself. I do not want to be cynical but what does it say about us that today’s politics include an idea that the more war dead, the better?
More military dead helps the bigoted Republican federal bosses know how to influence a sundowning president on how to retain male and white supremacist autocrat power. The more military people who die over Iran, the more MAGA can be manipulated to support a revenge war that should not have started in the first place. Plus, antiwar protest can be turned into false claims of terrorism, creating more excuses to interfere in our country’s already safe elections. And some others can cynically think, go ahead Trump: you only improve our chances to win a congressional majority in November.
So sad. Time to recommit to a civics that helps thwart corrupt uber-capitalist war power that profits by tearing up the earth, blowing things up, and killing. MARYHELEN BRAINARD Buena Vista
