July 13, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: The devil has sown seeds of discord in our community and nation. He has destroyed family unity through the sins of divorce, abortion and euthanasia. He has redefined the sins of sexuality: fornication (pre-marital sex), adultery (marital affair), sodomy (same-sex marriage) and child abuse (transgenderism). He has attacked religion through the proliferation of atheism, modernism and naturalism. His latest attack is against politics and it has to stop.
There is no civility in civil matters. Each week the [letters to the editor] of this newspaper blame, criticize and demean those who don’t agree with the writer. Unfortunately, our twoparty government creates a “we vs they” and “us against them” mentality and our political leaders in Washington, D.C. and Richmond are examples of being biased in their own party opinions and not working together for the common good because they can’t agree on its meaning.
What happened to the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do to you”? (Mt 7:12) AKA treat others as you would like to be treated. Instead it is, “Do to others as they have done to you.” This causes us to act with retaliation, revenge, violence, hatred toward others.
It used to be said, “Discuss anything but religion and politics.” Because we ignored that warning, our community and our nation have become polarized. Jesus warning, “one’s enemies will be those of his household” (Mt 10:36) has proved to be true through the attacks on the family by divorce, abortion, and euthanasia.
It also used to be said, “If you can’t say something good about someone, don’t say anything at all.” May we take this to heart and start sowing seeds of love in all we do and say.
