There were numerous events in the Rockbridge area marking the nation’s Bicentennial. In addition to the usual parades and fireworks, there was a cow milking contest that pitted Lexington’s mayor and other city officials against members of the county board of supervisors and the county administrator. - Buena Vista City Council elected councilman M.J. “Jack” Brockenbrough as mayor at a special organizational meeting. He succeeded Shuler A. Kizer, who had been mayor for six years. - Spanky’s, a delicatessen-type restaurant, planned to open in the fall in the building formerly occupied by Coiner Parts Inc. on Jefferson Street.

A summit sponsored by the Virginia Department of Health was held at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital offering information on how the facility was preparing for a potential flu pandemic.
- Ken Ruscio returned to his alma mater, Washington and Lee University, not as a visiting alumnus but as its president. - Jennifer Weaver was the new principal at Rockbridge County High School and the first female principal in the school’s 14-year history. At 30, she was also the youngest.
