July 1, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: The Supreme Court’s decision favoring the president in the case of Rebecca Slaughter v. Trump would allow him, at will, to fire the heads of independent agencies in charge of employment, environment, consumer product safety, communications, the FDIC, Securities & Exchange, and nuclear safety. That is an awesome power, proper to a king and not to the elected president of a democracy!
This increases the power of the executive branch of our government at the expense of what should be the equal powers of the legislative and judicial branches. It is a clear attack on our democracy, and it should be laid directly at the feet of unelected presidential advisers who seem to be favoring autocracy over the equality our Founders envisioned! R.
