Tyler St. Clair Underwood began work as Lexington’s first female police officer. Patrolmen would henceforth be called officers.
- Enrollment for the new Floyd S. Kay Vocational-Technical Center was on the rise, but was still below full capacity. Of the 148 students enrolled, 40 were from Lexington High School, 23 were from Parry McCluer High School, 30 were from Natural Bridge High School and 55 were from Rockbridge High School. -A new undergraduate library for Washington and Lee University took a big step toward reality when the university’s board of trustees authorized President E.R. Huntley to proceed with contract arrangements for the building of the library.

Swimming at Jordans Point was temporarily banned until additional safety measures could be installed around the low head dam that spanned the width of the river. - Nick Charles, treasurer for Theater at Lime Kiln’s board of directors, said that the theater had enough money to fund a summer’s worth of live acts. - Tim Dudley went from being Buena Vista’s acting city manager to being the “real” city manager. Dudley had been acting as city manager after Scott Dadson stepped down.
