Book Store Owner, Former SVU Librarian Starts July 1
The Historic Lexington Foundation, celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, has announced the appointment of a new executive director.
Stephanie D. Hardy, a 16year resident of Rockbridge County, will assume the role July 1, succeeding Margaret Samdahl who has served as executive director since 2023.
As a proven strategic leader, Hardy brings over a decade of experience directing library and archival operations, fostering community partnerships and expanding access to local history, explained Tom Camden, HLF vice president and chair of the search committee.
She brings additional experience in real estate, including knowledge of zoning, easements, and local government processes that inform preservation and development decisions.
Hardy holds a bachelor of science degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s in library and information science from San Jose State University.
She served as director of library services and archivist for Southern Virginia University from 2015 to 2025, having previously served as instructional services librarian and adjunct instructor at SVU. She most recently became co-owner and founder of Leaf & Lore, a local bookstore which opened in 2025 in Buena Vista.
She has served on the Rockbridge Regional Library board, the Rockbridge Historical Society board and has actively served other community and professional groups, including the Buena Vista Colored School Foundation.
“Skilled in guiding organizations through change while maintaining a strong focus on service, sustainability, and mission, Stephanie brings additional entrepreneurial experience as the founder of a local bookstore, reflecting a commitment to communitycentered cultural spaces,” said Camden.
