June 16, 1976

Gregory Dennis Hilton of Johnson City, Tenn., was arrested by state trooper J.L. Hines and charged with defrauding an innkeeper and fraudulent use of a credit card. He was using an American Express card that belonged to someone else for lodging and meals all along Interstate 81.

-A ribbon cutting was held at the Maury Service Authority water treatment plant. - The Joint Committee for Control of Lexington High School appointed county school Superintendent W. Herman Lee to fill the unexpired term of outgoing city Superintendent Raymond N. Chilsolm.

Victoria Pannell announced she was resigning as executive director of the LDDA, citing family obligations. - The Virginia Horse Center, Virginia Military Institute, the Marshall Museum, the Paxton House Historical Society and the Buena Vista Colored School all stood to benefit from a state spending plan approved by the General Assembly. - The Effinger Fire Department held its carnival parade. Mitch Wapner was the big winner in the fire department’s annual raffle.
