Retiring County School Employees Recognized

The Rockbridge County School Board honored retiring teachers, administrative staff and more at its meeting on June 9.

Sixteen employees from all six county schools and the central office either retired during the 2025-26 school year or are retiring now that the year is over. Combined, they have given a total of more than 300 years to Rockbridge County Schools.

The retirees are listed below, along with how long they worked for the district.

Those who retired in 2025 included Michael Craft, principal, Rockbridge County High School, 8.5 years; and Deborah Day, teacher assistant, Maury River Middle School, 10 years.

Retirees for 2026 include Kelly Cox, school nutrition supervisor, central office, 35 years; Andrea Harris, music teacher, Mountain View Elementary, 20 years; Sherry Higgins, reading specialist, Natural Bridge Elementary and Fairfield Elementary, 10 years; Jennifer Houck, itinerant early childhood special education teacher, two years; Rhonda Humphries, school board clerk, 31 years; Carolyn Johnson, maintenance administrative assistant, central office; 12 1/2 years; Jean Little, speech-language pathologist, FES, 38 years; Susan Mahood, elementary STEM teacher, Central Elementary, 35 1/2 years; Rebecca McFaddin, teacher, CES, 20 years; David Miller, teacher, RCHS, 33 years; Stacy Payne, teacher, FES, nine years; Wanda Schemehorn, school counselor, NBES, seven years; Calvin Smith, custodian, FES, 11 1/2 years; and Lisa van Ravenswaay, administrative assistant, RCHS, 18 1/2 years.
