Flashback Friday

June 16, 1960
Flashback Friday

You can tell a lot about an area by the ads in the paper. For example, this week's paper has ads for local events and real estate/mortgage, which shows that we are a growing community who likes to have a good time! Newspapers in Las Vegas may have ads for casinos and buffets, while papers in Texas could have ads for rodeos and the best place for a large serving of BBQ.

These days, the ads we see online are often for large, national or even international companies like car brands or clothing sites. Although these companies may provide important goods and services, and some are even tailored to a person's personal preferences, they are not a representation of our local commerce.

It's great to look into our past and read about the news and events, but the ads also give us insight - a different side of the human experience. This week, along with the front page, some marriage announcements and Lexington's new rescue vehicle, there are some ads for goods and events.

The front page of the Rockbridge County News on Thursday, June 16, 1960 had these stories:

  • A man was fatally stabbed during an argument with another man. The attacker fled the scene but later admitted to the crime after being found close by.
  • The area Little League was going to start, with 17 teams in various leagues and 4 teams in the junior girls' league.
  • A lawsuit was settled, far below the original filling, for injuries sustained in a car accident.
  • Two positions at different Virginia colleges were filled - the dean of college at W&L, and the dean of admissions at the University of Virginia.
