Washington and Lee University’s DeLaney Center will contribute to the LexRockBV celebration of Juneteenth by hosting a screening of the movie, “Something the Lord Made” (2004) next Wednesday, June 17, at 5:30 p.m. in the Stackhouse Theater. Admission is free, and pizza, dessert and drinks will be served.
Established in 2021 and named after eminent Lexingtonian and beloved W&L professor Theodore “Ted” DeLaney, the DeLaney Center serves the campus and the Lexington/Rockbridge community by sponsoring events that investigate Southern race relations, culture, and politics. The Center’s Screen to Square Film Series plays a vital role in carrying out its mission. During the 2025-2026 season of the series, the center has held programs related to the theme, “Racial Adversity and Southern Resilience.” This Juneteenth edition will round out the year’s quartet of explorations.
“Something the Lord Made“ stars Alan Rickman of “Harry Potter” fame and acclaimed performer Mos Def. The film tells the story of Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas, a white doctor and a Black janitor/lab tech, who joined forces to launch the field of cardiac surgery during the 1930s and 1940s. Following the screening, at approximately 7:25 p.m., panelists — including members of the Lexington/ Rockbridge community and W&L professors — will lead the audience into a discussion touching on public health, innovation and collaboration.
