TJ Maxx is coming to the College Square Shopping Center at 77 N. Lee Highway, north of Lexington. Signs for the store went up this past week, though the company has yet to announce when the store will actually open.

“We’re excited to welcome TJ Maxx to Rockbridge County and expand the variety of shopping opportunities available to our residents and visitors,” said Brandy Flint, Rockbridge County’s director of economic development. “This addition reflects continued investment in our community and gives people more choices close to home.”

The store space in the former Peebles/Gordman’s building has been undergoing renovations the past couple of months and social media has been awash with speculation about what retailer might be filling the space. There have been numerous posts on Facebook recently that the retailer would be TJ Maxx, a discount department store that sells primar- ily clothes and home fashions.

TJX Companies Inc., the retailer’s parent company, is headquartered in Framingham, Mass. There are more than 1,000 TJ Maxx stores in the United States. The closest ones to the Rockbridge area are in Staunton, Lynchburg and Roanoke.

The building in the College Square Shopping Center has been vacant for about five years. Peebles Department Store occupied the building for decades, from when it was built in the 1980s, until 2020, when Gordman’s, another department store, opened in the building for a brief period.

Information on how many employees will be hired for the new TJ Maxx store and what the process is for hiring employees could not be ascertained by press time for this story.
