Brownsburg Community Association Awards Scholarships

The Brownsburg Community Association has awarded three $1,200 scholarships to high school seniors, thanks in part to several donations from Brownsburg area community members.

The BCA board of directors had a challenging time choosing winners from the 16 applicants, said a spokesperson. This year the students were asked to submit an essay addressing the following question: “What is the meaning of community to you, and how will community be a part of your future in your post high school education?”

The BCA board of directors now awards a scholarship annually in memory of Dick Barnes. Barnes led the formation and founding of the Brownsburg Community Association and then, in 2008, the formation of the Brownsburg Museum. The winner of the third Dick Barnes Memorial Scholarship is Schuyler Coleman from Rockbridge County High School. Coleman plans to study bioengineering and minor in molecular and cellular biology at Lehigh University.

The other scholarship winner from Rockbridge County High School is Olivia Turner Hickman. She plans to study biology on the pre-health track at Washington and Lee University.

Riverheads High School had one scholarship winner: Kaitlyn Kiser. She plans to attend either James Madison University or Radford University and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Since the Brownsburg Community Association scholarship program started in 2017, the BCA has awarded $19,100 in scholarships to 22 students in the Brownsburg area.
