Ending the season on a high note, the Rockbridge County High School girls tennis team earned a 7-2 road win over Shenandoah District rival Buffalo Gap on Tuesday of last week in Swoope.
The Wildcats finished with a record of 2-14, both overall and in the district, with their other win coming five days earlier when they beat Stuarts Draft 5-4 at home. Gap fell to 1-14, both overall and in the district.
With last Tuesday’s win, the Wildcats avenged a 6-3 April 14 loss to Gap in Lexington, when RC was playing without its top player, senior Corinna Allen.
In the rematch, Allen won 8-5 in singles and teamed up with Grace Maquera Ramos for an 8-5 win in doubles.
Other singles winners for the Wildcats were Mila Baker at No. 3, Claire Taylor at No. 4, Charlotte Taylor at No. 5 and Jade Newhall at No. 6. At No. 3 doubles, sisters Claire and Charlotte Taylor teamed up for an 8-3 win.
The Wildcats will miss their three seniors: Allen, Claire Taylor and Bella Fitch.
Reviewing the season and praising the team’s progress, third-year RC head coach Mark Sholes said he and assistant coach Mike Moorman “are proud of how each of the girls on the team worked hard during practice and how they improved their play throughout the season.”
