Rockbridge Area Habitat for Humanity recently announced the recipients of its annual Golden Hammer Award, recognizing exceptional volunteer commitment and impact. This year’s honorees are Rufus Tyree, a longtime build site volunteer, and Helene Edwards, a dedicated ReStore volunteer who serves six days a week.
The awards were presented during a volunteer appreciation picnic held at Jordans Point Park, where supporters gathered to celebrate Habitat’s mission and the people who make it possible. The event was catered by Kenney’s and featured food, fellowship, and gratitude for the organization’s many dedicated volunteers.
Tyree has been a steady and reliable presence on the build site for more than eight years, contributing his time, skills and leadership to help construct safe, affordable homes for local families. His positive attitude, commitment to Habitat’s mission, and willingness to mentor fellow volunteers have made him an invaluable part of the team, said a spokesperson.
Helene Edwards was honored for her dedication to the Lexington ReStore. Starting in March of 2014, her consistent service for over 12 years has helped keep the store running smoothly, supporting Habitat’s work by generating funds for homebuilding while providing affordable, donated home goods to the community.
The Golden Hammer Award is presented annually to an individual or business who goes above and beyond in support of Habitat for Humanity’s work to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
