May 12, 1976

Former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter won the Democratic presidential nomination on the second ballot at Washington and Lee University’s 16th Mock Convention. - Approximately 50 new workers were on the job at Georgia Bonded Fibers Inc. in Buena Vista as a strike by local 1428 of the United Paperworkers International Union entered its second week. - Students at Washington and Lee University and a number of local residents were rehearsing daily at the old lime kiln for a performance of “Peer Gynt.”

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld was the guest speaker at Virginia Military Institute’s graduation. -An elderly Charlottesville couple was injured after the husband drove their car around the dropped railroad crossing warning gate and into the path of a northbound Norfolk & Southern train at the railroad crossing on Va. 56 in Vesuvius. - After 21 years and 117 wins, Doug Bartlett stepped down as the head lacrosse coach at VMI.
